SELF MASSAGE USING DOSHA OILS
Abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of self-massage with oil. Along with meditation, it is a time-honored daily ritual: a quiet invitation to slow down, return to the body, and offer yourself care.
You do not need to rush or perfect the practice. Begin with a few unhurried minutes, a little oil, and gentle attention.
How to practice abhyanga
- Choose a body oil suitable for your skin and follow its directions. If it is new to you, patch-test it first. Set a towel down and find a comfortably warm space.
- Warm a small amount of oil between your palms. It should feel comfortable on the skin, never hot.
- Massage your arms and legs with long, gentle strokes. Use light circular movements around the shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles.
- Move slowly over the chest and abdomen, keeping the pressure light and comfortable. Reach only as far around your back as you can without straining.
- Give your hands and feet a little extra attention. Sit down while massaging your feet, and take care when standing, as oil can make them slippery.
- If comfortable, rest for a few minutes before rinsing with warm water. Remove excess oil from your feet and clean any oily surfaces to prevent slipping.
Throughout the practice, let your breath remain easy. Notice the warmth of your hands and the simple experience of caring for yourself. Even a short ritual can be a meaningful pause in the day.
Avoid broken or irritated skin, and stop if the oil or massage causes discomfort. If you have a health condition or are unsure whether massage is suitable for you, ask your healthcare professional before beginning.
